Living in Costa Rica

It really all started in 7th grade when my Spanish class went to Costa Rica.  I was dying to go but my parents gave me the whole, “You can go if you pay for it” life lesson and so I stayed in depressing Ohio while some of my best friends went and played on the beach with turtles, ziplined and hiked volcanos.  I survived, but for the next decade I had the dream to go some day.

In 2013, Dan started working as an engineer in Springville, Utah, and he had a conversation one day about the very small possibility of employment opportunities opening up in Costa Rica.  I held a knife to his throat haha and told him that I would very much like to take that opportunity when it came.  He made sure to let his boss know that we would be very excited about any chance at an opportunity like that.

Fast forward 5 years.  We went to Carnegie Mellon in PA for grad school, had Beckham, and moved back to Utah.  We started to feel settled and I finally got a part time job that was perfect for our family.  Two weeks later Dan came home from work and said an opportunity opened up for us to move to Costa Rica if we were interested.  I basically started ripping things off of the walls.  4.5 months later we stepped off of the plane and arrived at our new home.

To say we are grateful to be here is a huge understatement.  I won’t say things are not hard.  I miss living close to family that spoils and loves Beckham.  I miss my close friends and how easy it is to make friends when everyone speaks the same language as you.  I miss cheap entertainment, groceries and gas.

But we are absolutely thrilled at the amazing experiences we are having.  Beckham goes to a Spanish Montessori school 3 mornings a week and is picking up so much Spanish.  Dan is an engineering manager over an incredible group of young guys that are so much fun and he works completely in Spanish.  Our tourist visas require us to leave the country every 90 days and travel all over Latin America.  We are meeting people from all over the world and constantly immersed in rich culture.

This page of my blog is dedicated specifically to keeping people up to date with our lives here in this beautiful country and to serve as a resource for people who want to come visit!   I am determined to see and experience every single square inch of Costa Rica before we leave onto the next adventure 🙂  (Lucky Dan and Beckham haha).  There is so much I want to share.  I’m learning and growing so much and really just falling in love with every single thing about Costa Rica.

We really hope everyone can come visit us.  Like…..EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE WORLD!  Haha but for real, the only thing missing here is some of our friends and family back home.  Our door is ALWAYS welcome to guests.  🙂
